Population & Environment A Critical Commentary
Question: Discuss about thePopulation Environment for a Critical Commentary. Answer: Introrduction: Environment and population are complementary to each other. The very existence of human life is based on environment. Environment has acted as the pulpit based on which human life has slowly and steadily come into being. Right from the days of the early civilisation man has found the favorable environment to lead its life obviously with the huge support from the environment and hence it could be said that life and environment has harmonising relationship (Morrissey, 2012). Environment became the major criteria for life and hence if the environment starts going against its will nothing could stop devastation and catastrophe and this is what has given rise to a new concept of Environmental Refugees. In the recent past there has been significant research on this subject and there are two key studies which have delved deep about this aspect (Hartmann, 2010). In his study Black, (2001) mainly studied the existence of environmental refugees and tried to find out whether it really has existence or it is just a conceptual attribute brought up for the discussion. On the other hand another study by Myers, (2005) critically discussed the emerging issue of environmental refugees and discussed the security aspect of the concept taking this as a real problem in the world. So apparently the second author tries to delve deep into the aspect of security for the environmentally displaced people. Giving the definition of the Environmental refugees both the authors were outright and this is the biggest similarity between their studies on the other hand the biggest disparity that remains is Black (2001) assumes that environmental refugee is a threat whereas Myers (2005) has clearly mentioned that this is reality (Morrissey, 2012). In the first study the author mainly discusses the concept of environmental refugee but doesnt try to discuss the related con cepts like security or safety of these displaced people whereas on the other hand second author provides effective statistical evidence of the total number of environmental refugees and tries to highlight the key problems that these environmentally displaced people are facing and why which makes the study clear and also helps to understand the main focus of the study (Hartmann, 2010). Both the studies have a dedicate column for favorable policies for the policy makers to use insights from there and develop strong policies for the environmental refugees and this stands for a similarity but the second study by Myers (2005) tries to highlight the environmental crises and security threats but Black (2001) doesnt attempt anything like that. Overall it could be concluded that the second study by Myers (2005) is much more convincing and persuasive as it doesnt stand on assumption and provides critical evidence which helps to prove the hypothesis of the study whereas the study by Black (200 1) is based on possible inferences and hence lacks empirical evidence which gives the second the study an upper hand (Morrissey, 2012).
